A Passion for Inclusive Sports Facilities: What Makes the Rapid City Bocce Complex Donor Wall Unique?

The Rapid City Bocce Sports Complex donor display is a custom-fabricated, weather-resistant outdoor recognition sign built to honor the municipal partners, corporate sponsors, and private philanthropists funding the new 16-court outdoor facility. Designed for high community visibility, it serves as a permanent tribute to the collaborative spirit of philanthropic leaders from all different backgrounds and areas of the country.

Successful outdoor environmental graphics often require seamless collaboration between specialized fabricators. For this project, our team designed, built, and installed the heavy-duty structural framework, while partnering with iZone Imaging to produce the highly durable, custom panels.

Why Build a Dedicated Bocce Complex? 

The bocce ball complex was developed as a way to help alleviate the extra time it was taking to set up and tear down for practices and tournaments. Permanent courts provide a lasting solution for an increasingly popular sport that all different ability levels and ages are able to participate with low impact joint and muscle strain.

Beyond serving Special Olympics athletes, the permanent courts provide the whole surrounding community a way to enjoy bocce. The expanded facility is actively being used by not only Special Olympics, but by city leagues and people who just enjoy playing.

How Do You Unite Civic and Philanthropic Partners in a Single Display? 

Expanding a civic sports facility requires navigating municipal approvals while properly stewarding private fundraising efforts. The Rapid City Bocce Complex expansion was funded through a unique combination of Rapid City Vision Funds and high-profile private donations.

Funds were heavily driven by the Legends Ride—a charity event spearheaded by NASCAR racer Rusty Wallace and Buffalo Chip Campground founder Rod Woodruff. The primary challenge was designing a piece that equitably honored city governance alongside these vibrant private charities. The final layout clearly delineates foundational sponsors, providing equal visual weight to individual champions and corporate entities.

Why Choose Static Architectural Signage Over Digital for Parks? 

When evaluating environmental graphics for public parks, development teams must carefully weigh the trade offs between static physical displays and digital donor walls.

While digital systems offer easily updatable donor lists, an outdoor public setting introduces significant risks regarding screen glare, potential vandalism, and extreme weather maintenance. For the Rapid City complex, a static, architectural physical wall was the most secure and reliable choice. It requires zero ongoing IT maintenance for the Parks & Rec department while providing permanent, prestigious recognition for major capital campaign contributors.

How Does the Design Stand Up to the Elements? 

Outdoor recognition systems demand a rigorous approach to material selection and structural integrity. To withstand UV exposure and South Dakota's temperature fluctuations, we engineered a heavy-gauge, powder-coated metal framework anchored deeply into a landscaped concrete base.

• Aesthetic Integration: The sign features overlapping circular elements in a bold crimson, gold, and teal palette, subtly mimicking the geometry of bocce balls while remaining highly legible from a distance.
  Rather than leaving the back of the donor display blank, it serves as a functional bocce ball feature, printed with the rules of the game and a QR code that allows visitors to support Special Olympics through a donation.
• Material Durability: By partnering with iZone Imaging, we integrated high-pressure laminate panels specifically engineered for harsh weather environments, guaranteeing long-term color fastness and structural stability.
• Complete Turnkey Execution: From the initial design charrette to final concrete pouring and structural installation, our team managed the physical build to ensure the sign’s longevity. For local stakeholders, being able to watch everything come together and seeing the finished product has been the blessing of a lifetime.

Remembering Monica Burgess: A Legacy of Inclusive Athletics 

This project stands as a permanent testament to the community leaders who championed it, most notably the late Monica Burgess. As a highly respected technology executive and a Board Chair of Special Olympics South Dakota, Monica was the driving force behind this complex.

Recognizing a growing need for athletes with intellectual disabilities to have dedicated, high-quality spaces, Monica partnered with local leaders, Rusty Wallace, and Rod Woodruff to secure the vision and funding for this expansion. A founding architect of the Rapid City Flame, her brilliant mind, practical determination, and generous heart forever changed the landscape of inclusive athletics in the region. Because of her unwavering commitment, this state-of-the-art facility will forever serve as the home of the South Dakota Special Olympics state bocce tournament.
